
2-Day Sake Breweries and
Cultural Workshops Tour

This area, which is called Nishitama, is a neighborhood located to the west of the metropolitan area in Tokyo. There are no crowds, no skyscrapers and no bustle of a city, but there are mountains, rivers, good old Japanese culture and sound of nature. It's a part of a national park. In such surroundings, people and nature coexist in harmony.

Day 1 ~Sake Breweries, Indigo Dyeing
and Japanese traditional Culture~
Date: 16 Oct. 2019 Meeting time: 9:30am


1. Meet at JR Ome Station
Meet a guide in front of JR Ome station in Tokyo.
It takes about an hour from Shinjuku by train.




2. Indigo dyeing factory “Kosouen”
A Japanese indigo dyeing studio Kosouen has still continued dyeing in an authentic and traditional method. You will dye a handkerchief by soaking and rubbing the cloth repeatedly in a vat filled with indigo liquid. You will take it home as a souvenir.




3. Tamura Sake Brewery
Tamura Sake Brewery has a beautiful garden surrounded by historic buildings. We hold a lunch party on the garden with their own sake.




4. Ishikawa Sake Brewery
Established in 1863, Ishikawa Sake Brewery is a distinguished sake maker that brews beer, too. Take a brewery tour and have some samplings.




5. Shiofune-kannonji Temple
The 15-meter tall standing statue of Kannon Bodhisattva is one of the features of the Shiofune Kannonji Temple besides historical buildings designated as cultural properties, huge Japanese cedar tree designated as a natural monument.


6. Mt. Mitake Cable Car
Take a ride on the steepest cable car in the Kanto region which gains 407m of elevation over a distance of 1,107m..


7. Shukubo lodging
Stay at a Shukubo lodging that is originally for pilgrims. Mt. Mitake has long been worshiped as a sacred mountain and there are still more than 20 Shukubo remained. Experience real Japanese culture like sleeping in a futon on tatami mats, taking in a hot bath and eating local food.
Day 2 ~Sake & Soy Sauce Breweries and Washi Paper~

1. Ozawa Sake Brewery
Ozawa Sake Brewery stands amongst the scenic beauty of Okutama, Tokyo. Tour the brewery where over 300 years of sake-making traditions are passed down through generations.



2. "Hinode Washi" Paper Making Workshop
Washi is Japanese traditional paper that is designated an Intangible Cultural Heritage by UNESCO. Washi paper is tough, long-lasting and it feels very nice. On this workshop, we can learn how to make washi papers from scratch and make handmade craft works. After that, we will take a lunch break and appreciate Japanese court music Gagaku.



3. Soy Sauce Brewery "Kondo Jozo"
Kondo Jozo - Soy sauce brewery produce their products by traditional methods that has been handed down for about 100 years. Tour the brewery and learn how to make soy sauce and get bottles of soy sauce at their shop.


4. JR Haijima Station
We will see you off at JR Haijima station.
